Saudi Embassy resumes operations in Tehran after over 7-year hiatus: Report

The Saudi Embassy in Tehran has resumed operations after a seven-year hiatus, according to Iran's state-run IRNA news agency. The move follows the reopening of Iran's embassy in Riyadh and the consulate and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) mission in Jeddah in early June. The two countries severed diplomatic ties in January 2016 after the Saudi Embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad were stormed by angry mobs following the execution of a Saudi Shia cleric. Talks to ease tensions began in April 2021 and were brokered by Iraq and Oman, with China playing a role in securing a breakthrough.
